Hi, I'm Jayani.
I'm from Cerritos, California, which you've probably never heard of unless you're from LA or Orange County. Think: near Knott's Berry Farm.
I started college in energy engineering, a major with fewer than 15 people in it. Then I wandered. I've had flings with computer science, math, and statistics, a semester-long crush on neuroscience, serious conversations with philosophy and rhetoric, long talks with economics, political economy, and public policy, a few on-again, off-again situations with biology and mechanical engineering, and one weird pivot toward architecture. I've declared a couple of them (and dropped them). These days I've settled into industrial engineering and operations research (IEOR). If you ask me if this is the right major, honestly, probably not. But I'm in too deep now, and most of what I care about happens outside the classroom anyway.
I get fascinated easily, but nothing has held my attention quite like AI safety. It's less a sudden obsession and more a feeling that it's both familiar and endlessly interesting, a place where all my scattered interests seem to meet.
Of course, even within AI safety, I've had my flings: technical research, governance and policy, econ of TAI, biosecurity. These days I think of myself as a fieldbuilder, mostly because I'm a bit greedy and it means I don't have to pick just one.
I created this website much later than I should have, but here it is: mostly a place for me to start writing, or at least to start writing publicly.
